The Monarch for Thursday, January 24th

BRRRRRR! Don't you wish it was warm like this?

In Mrs. Groves’s class...

Our third annual Math Fair was held Wednesday with collaboration from honor students from Bishop Chatard High School. They created such stations as Zoo Keepers, Medical Professions, Retail Store, Athletics, Cooking, and Engineering to give our students hands on experiences of how mathematics is used in our everyday lives. For example, students were given this sample problem: If a polar bear eats five fish a day, how many fish will it eat in a week? On a higher level, if a polar bear eats 20 pounds of fish a day, and it weighs 450 pounds, what percent of its weight is this?

In addition, there were eleven estimation stations, several that were created by our eighth grade class. Each student in the school submitted estimations for each activity and prizes were awarded in the closing ceremonies. A good time was had by all.

In Mrs. Bryant’s class...

Mrs. Bryant is looking for a few committed seventh grade students who enjoy science and younger students. The students will be working to write a short United Way: Youth as Resources grant to allow them to design and demonstrate science concepts for younger groups of students at St. Joan of Arc, and other schools as well. Students who are interested should contact Mrs. Bryant by next Thursday.

It is early in the third quarter, and any middle school student who feels that they need additional science help should let Mrs. Bryant know.

Just a reminder that science fair for eighth grade students is next Thursday, January 31st beginning at 8:05 a.m. in the gym and will last for about an hour. The students’ exhibits will stay up all morning, but the students will be at their poster to answer questions until they go to mass at 8:55 a.m. Eighth grade students presenting may either wear their school uniform or dress up (dress shirt for boys, dress pants or skirts for the girls).

In Mr. Carlstedt’s class...

The students will be moving to the next level in Social Studies. They will begin constructing questions using Bloom’s Taxonomy for notes.

Sample of Knowledge and template question:
What happened after...?
How many...?
Who was it that...?
Can you name the...?
Describe what happened at...?
Who spoke to...?
Can you tell why...?
Find the meaning of...?
What is...?
Which is true or false...?

In Mr. Heneghan’s class...

Students have been busy as all get out on their “St. Joan of Arc Is A Light For Me” essays. Look for student samples tucked into this week’s church bulletins.
Students also have a web-based assignment related to their AR books. This can only be turned in via my eclassroom.

The book that I am reading now is called Harmless. And to replace their parents' anger with concern, Anna, Emma, and Mariah makes up a story about why they're late getting home one night. But then the police get into it, and a man is arrested and accused of a crime that never happened. As I mentioned earlier characters there are a lot of them but there is one that stands out the most in this story and that is Anna. She is a good girl gone bad. When she meets
Mariah and she is a bad influence on Anna. I think the theme of this story is once you tell one little lie you have to tell a bigger lie to get out of it. All of this is happening in a suburb of California.I think this is a great book and all teenage girls should read it shows people getting in the wrong crowd and peer pressure.

AR Summary

If you like books that have a lot of drama then you will like Someone to Love Me by Anne Schraff. It is about a girl named Darcy, and she thought no one liked her then she met a boy named Bobby. Bobby was not a good person because he hurt Darcy’s friend Stacy by punching her and beating her up. Darcy knew what he did to Stacy. Darcy thought he changed, but in the end he did not. He still was doing drugs. He also was hitting on Darcy and he bruised her wrist.
The story took place in today’s world, at Buford High School.
Darcy is the main character, and she never wants to go to school. Stacy, Bobby, Ralph were the other three characters in the story. Stacy is a nice person. She always tried to get Darcy to go to school, but it never worked. Bobby is a bad person, and he did drugs and hurt people. Ralph was another bad person, and he was a drug dealer.
The theme was that you should be careful of who you hang around.
It was a good book because I like books with drama mixed in with the stories I read, and the more I read the more interesting it got.

His great-great-great grand father anga yelnats who supposable stole a pig from madam zeronie she said when he took the pig. That he would have to carry it up the mountain to let it drink from the water and sing a song “if only if only the woodpecker sigh the bark on the tree was as soft as sky the wolf waits below hungry and lonely he cries to the moon if only if only”. Then after he was done he would have to carry madam zeronie up the mountain. AR essay

The book I am reading is called Eragon. This book is full of twists and turns, if you like Lord of the Rings you will love this. Once you start reading this book you will never want to put it down. The main characters in this book are Brom Eragon, and Saphira. This book takes place in mostly mystical places in Alagaesia some places include Carvahall, the spine, and Teirm.
I think this book is good, because I like reading action books, comical books, and horror books.
This story is about a boy named Eragon who lives with his cousin Roran and his uncle Garrow. One day he was hunting and came across a solid hard rock. Very soon the rock brakes to reveal none other than a baby dragon, our hero Eragon goes to the village storyteller Brom and finds out names for dragons later. He later names her Saphira. Saphira and Eragon soon become closer than friends they soon become so close that they can talk to each other with only their minds. Having Saphira is a secret that only he knows about, for now. Very soon the villagers get suspicious, when they start seeing large footprints around a forest called the Spine. Not to long after that word has gotten out about these strange signs, and before you know it the king sends out two creatures called ra’zac’s. Saphira has quickly flown Eragon away from his house, and when he gets back he is horrified about what he sees. If you want to know what happens in this action packed noel than go pick up Eragon at your library.
In conclusion I think that the moral of this story is that secrets can’t last forever and at some point they are bound to come out.

The title of the book I am reading now is called Black and White. It is about two boys
named Marcus “Black” and a boy named Eddie “White’. One night while Eddie was
looking through his attic, he discovered his grandfather’s gun. When he showed it to
Marcus they decided since they didn’t have any money for things they wanted, so they
would hold stickups. They promised that they would only do it until they earned enough
for the school trip and shoes, but the didn’t stop. One night while Eddie and Marcus were
holding a stickup Eddie had done something he would regret the rest of his life. He had
accidentally pulled the gun trigger on a person in a mall lot, but he didn’t die. Marcus thought he recognized him and he was right. The man Eddie had shot drove Marcus’s bus everyday. A week later the man recognized Marcus from the stickup and reported him to the police. Marcus was arrested and took the blame for the whole thing…… The person I think stands out the most is Marcus. Even though his friend pulled the trigger he hasn’t ratted on him yet. I think this is an amazing book and some of my friends have already asked to borrow it.

Two boys. Two fronts. One reason. Solider boys is a bought two boys named Deter and Spence who both want to prove they mature and decide to enter the second world war two. Deter a fifteen year old boy who wants to prove to his hero and family he is no longer a boy but a man and joins the Hitler youth and gets sent out to the war because of his good and leader like attitude but deter soon learns that the war is bigger than he imagined. Spence a sixteen year old boy joins the paratrooper squad to show his family and the girl he liked he is serious. Spence soon learns that the real lesson is not in killing but in caring.
The setting of this book is in the United States and Germany in the 1940’s. I would defiantly recommend this book to people who are interested in world war two or just wars in general. This is a great book that can teach you that it is not how big your muscles are but how big your heart is.

SNAKEHEAD

This book is about teenage spy Alex Rider. He has been trained throughout his whole life to be a spy without knowing it. His uncle, Ian Rider was also a spy. He was recruited the British secret service, also known as MI6. His uncle taught him many things. He taught Alex how to scuba dive, speak in foreign languages, he even trained him in Karate. Alex’s father was a spy who died in a plane crash on the way to his vacation with Alex’s mom. He died when Alex was very young.
On this mission Alex has to impersonate a boy from Afghanistan with his Godfather, Ash. He agreed to go on this mission hoping to find out information from his Godfather about his father. They are acting as Afghans because they kidnapped and interrogated two Afghans that were doing business with the snakeheads. The snakeheads are an organization that ships weapons illegally, kidnaps people, and many other illicit acts. By the way, this story takes place in Bangkok.
I’m not that far in the book yet, but I think Alex and his Godfather will accomplish their mission. I think there will be a strange twist in the book such as his father might not really be dead. Overall this is a good book and YES I would recommend this book to anyone that might want to read it.
